Can You Tile Over Tile? A Guide to Preparing Tiles for Tiling Over

Renovating or updating the look of your space often involves considering options for your existing tiled surfaces. If you’re wondering whether you can tile over tile, the answer is yes! Well, in some circumstances.

Tiling over existing tiles can be a practical and cost-effective solution that saves you time and effort. In this blog post, we will explore the process of tiling over tile and the necessary steps you need to take to prepare the tiles for a successful installation. Let’s get started!

  1. Assessing the Condition of the Existing Tiles:

Before proceeding with tiling over tile, it’s crucial to evaluate the condition of the existing tiles. Ensure that they are firmly adhered to the surface and free from cracks, loose pieces, or significant damage.

If the tiles are loose or damaged, it’s recommended to remove them entirely before proceeding. Tiling over a compromised surface can compromise the new installation.

Check the heights of your existing flooring against things like your door (which can be shave down) but more importantly pay attention to where your door is and the new area meets the old area.

It’s normal to have a small step in these spots with a piece of trim along the face (such as silver flat bar) to finish the step off nicely.

  1. Cleaning and Preparing the Existing Tiles:

To ensure proper adhesion of the new tiles, it’s essential to clean and prepare the existing tiles. Follow these steps:

a. Thoroughly clean the tiles: Remove any dirt, grease, or grime using a suitable tile cleaner and a scrub brush. Pay attention to grout lines and ensure they are clean and free from debris.

b. Sand the existing tiles: Lightly sand the surface of the tiles using 80 to 120-grit sandpaper. This process helps roughen the surface and improve adhesion AND/OR use a ‘gritted primer’ that has physical sand like pieces in the primer (such as the Eco Grip Prep N Prime).

c. Repair any damaged areas: Fill in any cracks or chips in the existing tiles using an appropriate tile filler or epoxy. Allow it to dry and sand it smooth if necessary.

d. Remove any protruding elements: If there are any raised areas such as bullnose or decorative tiles, consider removing them to achieve a more even surface. This step is optional but can help create a smoother finished result.

  1. Priming the Existing Tiles:

Priming the existing tiles is crucial for promoting adhesion between the old and new surfaces. Follow these steps:

a. Select a suitable primer: Choose a high-quality primer specifically designed for tiling applications. Consult with a tile professional or your local hardware store for the best product recommendation.

b. Apply the primer: Using a paint roller or brush, apply the primer evenly over the entire surface of the existing tiles. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions before proceeding to the next step.

Tiling over tile can be a viable option to update and refresh your space without the need for extensive demolition.

By carefully assessing the condition of the existing tiles, properly cleaning and preparing the surface, priming, and following correct installation techniques, you can achieve a successful tile-over-tile project – as long as there is room to do so!

It’s important to note that every tiling project is unique, and seeking advice from a professional tiler can provide valuable guidance tailored to your specific circumstances.
